Why Sleep Is One of the Best Medicines
Most of us know how we feel after a poor night's sleep. We're tired, irritable, forgetful, and it seems to take twice as much effort just to get through the day. Many people accept this as a normal part of getting older or living a busy life. It isn't. Good sleep isn't a luxury, it's one of the most important investments you can make in your health. In fact, you could think of sleep as your body's overnight repair shift. While you're asleep, your body is incredibly busy.
During sleep your brain organizes memories and stores new information. Your immune system strengthens its defenses. Hormones that regulate hunger, stress and blood sugar are balanced. Muscles and tissues repair themselves. Even your brain's waste removal system goes to work, clearing away proteins and other substances that build up during the day. When sleep is cut short night after night, these repair processes don't have enough time to finish their work. The effects may not show up immediately, but over months and years they can affect nearly every part of your body.
